1928年 7月 29日 (农历六月十三 ),李嘉诚就出生在广东省潮州城内北门街面线巷。李氏家族可以说是书香世家。李嘉诚的曾祖父李鹏万曾是清朝每 12年甄选一次的文官八贡之一,在当地引起了不小的轰动,然而李家宅子前用于插贡旗的碑座,就是见证。
初到香港,饱尝苦难 1940年冬天,李嘉诚和弟弟李嘉昭、妹妹李素娟,随父母踏上艰难的旅程。历经千辛万苦,跋山涉水10多日,终于来到目的地香港。
李嘉诚一家寄住在舅父家。庄静庵问了老家的近况,然后介绍香港的现状。他劝姐夫不要着急,安心休息,逛逛香港的街市,再慢慢找工作。庄静庵未提起让姐夫李云经上他的公司做职员,也许,庄静庵认为李云经辈份比他高,不便指使管理。庄静庵在商言商,绝不把公司人事与亲戚关系搅和在一起。
在香港这个商业社会,一切都颠倒过来,拜金主义盛行,钱财成为衡量人的价值的惟一标准。对李嘉诚来说,最困难的还是英语关。当时,李嘉诚在香港的中学念书,而港英政府推行殖民化教育,因此香港的中学,大都是英文教学。李嘉诚学英语,几乎到了走火入魔的地步。
从煲茶仔到钟表学徒
到香港的第二年,李嘉诚的父亲就不幸病逝,那年他才15岁。为了帮助母亲和抚养弟妹,李嘉诚忍痛告别学堂,踏上了打工谋生的道路。他的第一份工作就是在港岛西营盘的“舂茗”茶楼,做煲茶的堂仔。按照茶楼规定,伙计必须在早上5点赶到茶楼,每天工作15个小时以上。这对一个十四五岁的少年来讲,实在是太累了,但李嘉诚坚持了下来。他后来在谈起当年的经历时说:“我那时最大的希望,就是美美地睡3天3夜。”
从茶楼辞职,李嘉诚进了舅父的钟表公司。在20世纪40年代,钟表业是一项新兴的高技术产业,就好比现在的IT一样。李嘉诚早就有心在这个方面谋求发展,而且他舅舅庄静庵正是当时香港钟表业的佼佼者。李嘉诚之所以没有立即进入舅舅的钟表行,就是因为他想向世人证明,他为舅父做事,不是在接受恩赐。

“塑胶花大王” 的美誉
李嘉诚在香港快人一步研制出塑胶花,填补了香港市场的空白。李嘉诚走物美价廉的销售路线,大部分经销商都非常爽快地按李嘉诚的报价签订供销合约。有的为了买断权益,主动提出预付50%订金.掀起了香港消费新潮流,长江塑胶厂由默默无闻的小厂一下子蜚声香港塑胶业界。
1957年岁尾,长江塑胶厂改名为长江工业有限公司。公司总部由新莆岗搬到北角,李嘉诚任董事长兼总经理。厂房分为两处,一处仍生产塑胶玩具,另一处生产塑胶花。李嘉诚把塑胶花作为重点产品。塑胶花为李嘉诚带来数千万港元的盈利,长江厂成为世界最大的塑胶花生产厂家,李嘉诚塑胶花大王的美名,不仅蜚声全港,还为世界的塑胶同行所侧目。

塑胶花为李嘉诚掘得第一桶金,这不仅使他赢得了“塑胶花”大王称号,也使他赚的盆满钵满。人类崇尚自然,而塑胶花无论如何都不能取代有生命的植物花。
李嘉诚挺进地产的原则是谨慎入市,稳健发展。具体做法就是不卖楼花,不贷款,不按揭,只租不售,有效地避开银行挤提和地产危机。所谓卖楼花,就是一反原来地产商整栋售房或据以出租的做法,在楼宇尚未兴建之前,就将其分层分单位预售,得到预付款就动工兴建。

父亲病逝后,作为长子的李嘉诚为养家糊口放弃学业,去一家钟表公司打工,之后又到一家塑胶厂当推销员。李嘉诚深知,要想成为一个出色的推销员,首要是勤奋,其次是头脑灵活。在日后的推销生涯中,李嘉诚便充分发挥了这等“窍门”。当其他同事每天只工作八小时的时候,李嘉诚就工作十六个小时,天天如是。李嘉诚对“打工”的看法是:“对自己的分内工作,我绝对全情投入。从不把它视为赚钱糊口,向老板交差了事,而是将之当作是自己的事业。”就这样,李嘉诚只花了一年时间,业绩便超越其他六位同事,成为全厂营业额最高的推销员。他当时的销售成绩,是第二名的七倍。十八岁的他受到老板的赏识,被擢升为部门经理。一年后,他当上了销售公司总经理。李嘉诚的快速擢升还有一段插曲:他在厂里当销售员时,再忙也要到夜校进修。他在会考合格后打算去读大学,老板为挽留这个人才,便索性把他提升到总经理的岗位上了。

“长江”最初的风波

经过这短短一役,李嘉诚开始估量自己的实力,他相信若自立门户,成绩可能更好。一九五○年,二十二岁的李嘉诚终于辞去总经理一职,尝试创业。当时,李嘉诚的资金十分有限,两年多来的积蓄仅有七千港元,实不足以设厂。他向叔父李奕及堂弟李澍霖借了四万多元,再加上自己的积蓄,总共五万余港元资本,在港岛的皇后大道西,开设了一家生产塑胶玩具及家庭用品的工厂,并取荀子《劝学篇》中“不积小流,无以成江海”之意,将厂名定为“长江”。

起初,李嘉诚只知不停地接订单及出货,忽略了质量控制,致使产品愈来愈粗劣。结果不是延误了交货时间,就是引起退货并要赔偿,工厂收入顿时急跌。加上原料商纷纷上门要求结账还钱,银行又不断催还贷款,“长江”被逼到破产的边缘。这使李嘉诚明白自己实在是操之过急,低估了当老板的风险。

如何才能挽救绝境中的长江塑胶厂?李嘉诚靠的还是“信义”二字——与客户有信,与员工有义。他召集员工大会,坦言自己在经营上的失误,衷心向留在厂里的所有员工道歉,同时还保证,一旦工厂可以度过这段非常时期,随时欢迎被辞退的工人回来上班。之后,李嘉诚穿梭于众多银行、原料供应商及客户之间,逐一赔罪道歉,请求他们放宽还款期限,同时拼尽全力,为货品找寻客户,用蚀本价将次货出售,筹钱来购买塑胶材料和添置生产机器。到一九五五年,高筑的债台终于拆掉,业务渐入佳境,没多久还开设了分厂。

一九五七年初的一天,李嘉诚阅读新一期的英文版《塑胶》杂志,偶然看到一小段消息,说意大利一家公司利用塑胶原料制造塑胶花,全面倾销欧美市常这给了李嘉诚很大灵感。他敏锐地意识到,这类价廉物美的装饰品有着极大的市场潜力,而香港有大量廉价勤快的劳工正好用来从事塑胶花生产。他预测塑胶花也会在香港流行。李嘉诚抓紧时机,亲自带人赴意大利的塑胶厂去“学艺”,在引入塑胶花生产技术的同时,还特意引入外国的管理方法。返港后,他把“长江塑胶厂”改名为“长江工业有限公司”,积极扩充厂房,争取海外买家的合约。

在“长江”的客户中,有个美籍犹太人马素曾订了一批塑胶产品,打算运到美国销售,后来不知何故临时取消合同。李嘉诚并没有要求赔偿,他对马素说:“日后若有其他生意,我们还可以建立更好的关系。”马素深感这位宽厚的年轻的创业者,是个可做大事的人,于是不断向美国的行家推销“长江”的产品。自此,美洲订单如雪片般飞来。李嘉诚由此进一步感悟“吃亏是福”的道理。
